Making purchases via eShop on Wii U and 3DS will no longer be possible from March 27, 2023
It will no longer be possible to purchase games via the eShop on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS from March 27, 2023. It was already known that Nintendo was going to do this, but no specific date had yet been mentioned.
Nintendo recommends customers to use up their credit in the older eShops before March 27, 2023, if they still plan to buy digital Wii U and 3DS games. After that, it is no longer possible to make purchases or download free content. It is no longer possible to make purchases via StreetPass Mii Plaza, the theme shop and the Nintendo Badge Arcade. You will still be able to redownload games and DLC, receive software updates and play online on Wii U and 3DS, Nintendo says.
Support services are shut down earlier. For example, from May 23, 2022 it is no longer possible to use a credit card to add money to the account on the older platforms. Also, from August 29, 2022, customers will no longer be able to top up their credit in the Wii U and 3DS eShop with a credit card.
While top-ups will no longer be possible from the end of August, users will still be able to redeem valid download codes to get games and DLC before the end of March 2023. In addition, users will be able to merge their Nintendo Network ID credit, which is intended for the Wii U and 3DS eShop, with the credit associated with their Nintendo Account, which is used in the eShop on Switch. This shared credit can be used to purchase games on the Switch, 3DS and Wii U until March 27, 2023. After that, it can only be spent in the eShop on the Switch.
