Light, the American maker of the Light L16 with sixteen cameras, will collaborate with Sony’s camera division. Camera systems that Light will supply to smartphone makers, among others, will have Sony IMX camera sensors on board.

The Light camera systems should enable smartphones with more than four cameras on one side. The Light L16 has cameras with different focal lengths, with the software allowing users to adjust the focus point and zoom in on images afterwards. Light already announced last year that it was aiming to bring the technology to smartphones.

Both companies say they will work together on developing and marketing setups with more than four cameras on phones. Sony’s camera sensors are in smartphones of almost all brands. The IMX sensors have competition from, among others, Samsung’s camera department, Omnivision and smaller players such as Galaxycore.

It is unknown if and when a first smartphone with Lights camera technology will be presented. It was previously rumored that HMD would work with Light for its Nokia smartphone with five rear cameras, but it is unknown if that is true.
