Magic Leap has sold only 6,000 of its augmented reality glasses

Magic Leap has sold just 6,000 copies of its augmented reality glasses in recent months. That is much less than the initial expectation of 100,000 pairs of glasses. Partly due to the low sales figures, there would have been many layoffs in the company.

It concerns the sales in the first six months that the glasses were available. This is apparent from a report that The Information has seen. The company sells the first prototype of the glasses, the Magic Leap One Creator Edition, for 2300 euros. Magic Leap had initially told investors it expected to sell a million pairs of glasses, but was eventually forced to adjust that figure to 100,000. Partly because the sales figures are so bad, Magic Leap has had to lay off ‘dozens’ of employees in various departments. The company should also have taken all kinds of other measures, such as a stop on business trips. Magic Leap spent between $40 and $50 million a month in 2018.

Magic Leap has been plagued by setbacks for years, and has a history of creating unrealistic expectations. The company worked for years in great secrecy on a pair of glasses, the first images of which were very promising. Partly because of this, the secretive company received billions from investors, and gained a lot of name recognition in Silicon Valley. When the first real images of the glasses came out a year and a half ago, they turned out to be quite disappointing.
