MacRumors: Apple’s TrueDepth Camera Module Will Be Easier to Replace
Authorized Apple technicians will soon be able to replace an iPhone’s TrueDepth camera module more easily with a new spare part. That reports MacRumors. It is not yet clear when the new part will be put into use.
The new spare part contains, according to the memo who could see MacRumors, all FaceID and other camera components that the system needs. According to MacRumors, Apple hopes that this way fewer iPhone devices have to be completely exchanged if a defect is found in the TrueDepth camera module.
It is not clear exactly when the new spare part will be put into use. MacRumors writes that Apple technicians who work in Apple retail stores or Apple-authorized repair shops will soon have access to the part. They can also use diagnostic tools to determine whether the new part can actually be used in the event of a failure of the TrueDepth camera system.
Apple introduced the TrueDepth camera system in 2017 along with the iPhone X presentation. This camera system includes an infrared camera, proximity sensor, floodlight for diffusing infrared light, front camera and dot projector. With the help of software, the camera system is able to recognize depth in the image and map it. This makes facial recognition as FaceID possible.
