macOS beta hints at higher resolutions for new MacBook Pros

A beta version of macOS Monterey includes screen resolutions not in use with current Apple hardware. It could be the resolutions of future MacBook Pro models with ARM socs.

It concerns resolutions of 3456×2234 and 3024×1964 pixels, MacRumors discovered. That corresponds to screen ratios of about 16:10. For the current MacBook Pro 16″ Apple uses an LCD with a resolution of 3072×1920 pixels and with the 13″ version that is 2560×1600 pixels.

If the new MacBook Pros do indeed get the higher screen resolutions, the pixel density will rise to about 250ppi, compared to 226ppi with the current models. This increase would make the screens more usable with 2x scaling. Apple calls that the Retina setting. The workspace on the 16″ model would then correspond to 1728×1117 pixels and on the smaller model it would be 1512×982 pixels.

It is not yet clear what type of screen panels the new MacBook Pros will receive. There are rumors about LCDs with mini LED backlight and there are also rumors that Apple wants to switch to OLED screens next year. The MacBook Pro models will probably get Apple’s M1X soc with more cores and more RAM than the M1. In May there was already a lot of information about various variants of the ARM soc.

It is not yet known when Apple will announce the new MacBook Pro models. Rumors speak of an event in October or November to showcase new MacBooks. It would be a 16″ version and a 14″ version.
