MacBook Pro 15.4″ gets AMD Vega 20 and Vega 16 GPU as an option
AMD has announced Vega 20 and Vega 16 GPUs for laptops and Apple will offer them as an option from the end of November in its MacBook Pro 15.4″. The Vega GPUs are combined with 4GB hbm2.
Apple briefly mentioned the arrival of the new GPU options in its announcement of the new MacBook Air. AMD has simultaneously put a product page online about the Vega 20 and Vega 16. Both GPUs are housed in the Radeon Pro series, but according to a promotional video they are also intended for games.
AMD has not yet disclosed many details. For example, it is not clear what the clock speeds are and how much the GPUs consume. The numbers in the name probably indicate how many compute units the GPUs have. AMD has the Vega 64 and Vega 56 video cards in its range for desktops and AMD puts a maximum of a Vega 11 GPU in its own apus for laptops.
Apple reports on its website that the MacBook Pro 15.4″ will be available from the end of November with the Vega 20 or Vega 16. Both GPUs are combined with 4GB hbm2. Pro 560X are equipped is not yet known.
It is not yet clear whether other manufacturers will also put the Vega 20 and Vega 16 in laptops. AMD’s promotional video does suggest that this is possible, but in its announcement AMD also only mentions Apple’s MacBook Pro.
