MacBook Air users report system crashes after firmware update

Dozens of users of 2011 MacBook Air models report problems with their laptops after implementing a recently released firmware update. The update was supposed to address some issues with the older MacBook Air models.

On July 15, Apple released EFI Update 2.9, and the company recommends users of MacBook Air models built in mid-2011 to apply that update. The update is said to resolve issues with waking from sleep and spinning fans at full throttle. However, several users report on the Apple support forum that they encountered problems while installing.

For many users, OS X continued to indicate that the update still needed to be installed after the implementation, and in those cases the users also continued to see the old firmware version on their system. However, some users even have systems that won’t boot and an smc reset by pressing shift+fn+ctrl+power wouldn’t work. For some users, the laptop worked again after performing an SMC reset three times. The problem occurs with both the 11″ and 13″ versions of the 2011 Air. Apple has not yet withdrawn the update.
