Loading times for some PlayStation 4 games have been cut drastically
A number of PlayStation 4 games have received updates that make them load much faster. In some cases it was two minutes and now it is only 14 seconds. It is not clear how this is possible. It may have to do with the arrival of the PlayStation 5.
There is an extensive comparison video of The Last of Us: Remastered on YouTube, before and after the latest update. Previously, starting a new game took one and a half minutes, after the patch it is 14 seconds. Loading a save game first took two minutes and after the update this has also been shortened to about 14 seconds.
It is unclear why the game can suddenly load so much faster. Sony may apply new compression techniques. Ghost of Tsushima, a PlayStation 4 game released this year, also has remarkably short loading times. The technology that was developed for this may now have been applied to several first-party games.
According to Video Games Chronicles, other games have also been silently patched in recent times. These would include Until Dawn, God of War and God of War 3: Remastered, all first-party titles from Sony. There are no extensive patch notes of the updates; the site suggests it may have to do with the arrival of the PlayStation 5. The games may have received updates to make them compatible with the new console.
