List shows 1200 Windows games on Steam that run ‘completely stable’ on Linux
An unofficial list that tracks how stable Windows games run on Linux now lists over 1,200 games that should be “completely stable.” The list came about after Steam introduced its Play service as a beta, which allows more games to be played on Linux.
The list, maintained by Steam users, is completed by people who test Windows games on Linux and then record their findings via a form. It’s unclear how accurate these tests are and how consistent the findings are. There are now more than 2500 games on the list, of which about 1200 have the designation ‘completely stable’. About 830 games are ‘stable’, which can mean, for example, that the sound is not fully working or that controller support is missing. There is also a website that allows viewing the list through an interface and shows the most popular games.
The project is called Steam Compatibility Reports. Valve recently announced that it had revived its Steam Play service through the development of Proton. That is based on Wine and makes it possible to play Windows games on Linux systems. Speaking at the announcement, Valve said there are 27 games so far that have been officially designated as stable as they have gone through a testing process. However, it is also possible to get started and test games yourself, from which the current list has arisen. In the future, players should be able to vote for games to be nominated for whitelisting.
Players who want to try the beta of the service can sign up for it and then follow the necessary instructions.
