The nonprofit Linux Foundation has announced the preview release of IoTivity. The new open source software framework should become a new standard for internet of things applications. Companies such as Intel and Samsung are involved in the project, among others.

The umbrella organization involved in the project is called OIC. More than fifty companies have joined the organization, the announcement states. The OIC was founded last summer and is supported by companies such as Intel and Samsung.

The Linux Foundation will host the IoTivity project. The goal is to create a new standard for internet of things applications. Devices should be able to connect to each other more easily this way. The announcement states that the project is open to everyone and that it uses several APIs that should be accessible in multiple programming languages and for various operating systems. The project is made available under an Apache license.

However, several companies want to create a standard. For example, companies such as LG, Panasonic, Microsoft and Sony have joined the Allseen Alliance. The organization uses open source software designed by Qualcomm and made available under Apache and BSD licenses. The Allseen system is not linked to any particular platform or IP network, making it suitable for WiFi, 3G/4G, Bluetooth and Ethernet connections.
