Linux distribution JingOS also gets a smartphone version
The developers of JingOS have shown images of a working demo of JingOS for smartphones. The Linux distribution is being developed by the Chinese developer Jingling and is currently only available for tablets.
Jingling’s video shows a demo of JingOS 0.6 on a smartphone. The operating system only works in landscape mode and the image cannot be rotated. According to the developer, it is a “very early demo” of the operating system, which is very similar to iPadOS.
Outside of this limitation, this early version seems to work well on the phone’s small screen. Opening and controlling apps is smooth and swipes for closing and switching apps are also supported. Jingling has not given any indication when a first (preview) version of JingOS for smartphones will be available.
In February, the makers of JingOS released a first preview version of the Ubuntu-based operating system for tablets. The operating system is available for devices with x86_64 processors. ARM processors are also planned to be supported in the future.
Meanwhile, Jingling is also developing its own tablet: the JingPad A1. Jingling will start a crowdfunding campaign for this in May. If successful, production of the tablet will start in July 2021.
