LG will release LCD TVs with quantum dots next year – update
LG will release LCD TVs with quantum dots next year, a CEO of the company told South Korean media. Until now, the manufacturer focused only on OLED TVs in the high-end segment. The South Korean TV maker has already said it will start working with quantum dots.
The televisions with quantum dots will be cheaper than the OLED models, the CEO tells Korea Herald. Until now, LG sells its OLED TVs for prices of two thousand euros or much higher than that. With its quantum dot models, LG probably wants to make the TVs in the price ranges below that more attractive.
LG first talked about TVs with this technology almost two years ago. Quantum dots are small crystals from two to ten nanometers that can display colors based on their size. TV manufacturers can place a thin film with the crystals in front of the backlight, which gives the screens a higher color saturation.
Many competitors now use quantum dots in their TVs, including market leader Samsung and Japan’s Sony. LG further said that it will show a new hardware platform for OLED TVs at CES tech fair, which will take place in January next year in Las Vegas. That is not yet about a rollable TV, it should only be released around 2020.
Update, 9:40: LG has already marketed LCD TVs with quantum dots in Australia, among others. It touts those screens under names such as Prime 4K and ColorPrime.
