LG V50 ThinQ 5G smartphone has optional second screen in case
LG has announced its first 5G smartphone, the V50 ThinQ 5G. The manufacturer also comes with an optional second screen for the phone, a 6.2 “OLED panel that is processed in a cover. LG also presents the G8 ThinQ.
LG will not present a foldable device at the Mobile World Congress, but it will participate in the trend of double screens. The manufacturer does this with an optional second screen in a cover for the V50 ThinQ 5G. The device itself has a 6.4″ OLED screen with a 19.5:9 ratio and a notch at the top. The second screen has no notch and is slightly less elongated, so the diagonal with 6.2″ is also somewhat smaller.
When the second screen is confirmed, an icon will appear in the interface. This makes it possible to switch between the screens and switch the second screen on or off. There is a function to split the screens each in half, so that a total of four apps can be displayed and used at the same time. In some games, the second screen can be used as a controller, LG says. The optional screen runs on the smartphone’s battery.
The LG V50 ThinQ 5G contains a Snapdragon 855-soc and Qualcomm’s X50 modem. The device has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of flash storage, which can be expanded with a micro-SD card. At the back are three cameras, with angles of view of 107, 78 and 45 degrees. There is also a second front camera with a 90-degree wide-angle lens.
The device runs on Android 9.0 and the housing is water resistant. LG uses a vapor chamber for cooling and claims that the device does not heat up even under heavy load. LG will release the phone in markets where carriers are starting to offer 5G. The device therefore does not seem to be coming to the Benelux for the time being. A price has not yet been announced.
Along with the V50, LG also introduces the G8 ThinQ. That device also has a Snapdragon 855-soc, but no 5g modem. The G8 has a 6.1 “OLED screen, a 3500mAh battery and, like the V50, three cameras on the back.
At the front, next to the front camera, there is a depth sensor, LG uses that time-of-flight sensor in combination with infrared sensors for palm recognition. According to the manufacturer, this is more secure than fingerprint recognition. Users can unlock their phone by placing their palm in front of the front camera. It is also possible to opt for facial recognition.
LG further uses the depth sensor for taking selfies with a depth of field effect. The sensor is also used in the Air Motion functions, which are gestures to operate the phone, for example, while driving without touching it.
LG also mentions the arrival of the G8s ThinQ, but does not mention all the specifications. It seems to be a cheaper model; the screen and cameras have a lower resolution. The G8s has the same soc and also the depth camera on the front.
When the G8 devices will be released in the Benelux and what they will cost, has not yet been announced.
