LG to release 88″ 8k OLED TV in Europe this fall
LG will release its previously announced 88-inch OLED TV in the United States and Europe in the third quarter of this year. This will be LG’s largest OLED TV to date. 8K OLED TVs with screen diagonals are also coming from 65″ and 77″.
LG Electronics reports that pre-orders of the 88Z9 are already possible in South Korea this week. LG says nothing about an exact release date in the US and Europe for the time being, and that also applies to the price information. The manufacturer does let The Verge know that the retail price in Korea is 50 million won, converted 37,774 euros. With a pre-order, that price drops to 30,219 euros.
Partly because there is still little content in native 8k, the television contains a second generation of the Alpha 9 processor that is specially designed for scaling up to 8k resolutions. According to LG, the chip uses an extensive database of visual information and deep learning technology, allowing content to be optimized by recognizing source quality and then “applying the best algorithm.” The chip would also be improved for noise suppression.
Like the other OLED TVs that LG is releasing this year, the 88Z9 includes HDMI 2.1, which makes 8k content at 60 frames per second possible. Furthermore, Dolby Vision is supported, as are an automatic low latency mode, VRR and eARC. Dolby Atmos is supported for the sound and the TV is said to have an algorithm that can convert two-channel audio to 5.1 sound. Deep learning is also used for sound to amplify the sound in films, enhance the bass in music and to produce better voices at sporting events.
