LG starts updating G5 smartphone to Android 7.0

LG has started updating its smartphone G5 to Android 7.0. The update will be released first in South Korea and should also come to Europe in the coming weeks. The update arrives over-the-air to users of the phone.

By starting to offer the update, LG is the first, after Google, to have an update for a smartphone ready. Although it is an update to Android Nougat, instead of the latest version 7.1, the update contains the older release 7.0, which came out in August.

The update brings improvements to switching between apps and the appearance of notifications, LG claims. The South Korean manufacturer already had more experience than other manufacturers with Android 7.0, because its smartphone V20 runs out-of-the-box on this Android version.

Other manufacturers have not yet completed the update. Samsung will start a test for the S7 and S7 edge on Wednesday. This is again about Android 7.0. After the release of 7.0, Google released Android 7.1 in October, a version that until now only runs on Google’s smartphones Pixel and Pixel XL.

LG released the G5 this spring. The smartphone with 5.3″ LCD and Snapdragon 820-soc should distinguish itself with a semi-modular construction, which allows users to replace the bottom with an alternative bottom that can add a function. For example, a camera grip and alternative dac appeared for the G5.
