LG shows concept TV with two transparent OLED panels with OLED Shelf
LG Display has shown several new applications of its transparent 55″ OLED panels. For example, the company shows a consumer TV with two OLED panels above each other. This concept can roll down a non-transparent screen, so that the images can be seen better.
This OLED Shelf must be hung on the wall and, according to LG Display, can be used to show ‘television series or paintings’. Because the screen is 40 percent transparent, the television would blend into an environment more ‘seamlessly’. For example, users can hang paintings behind the television, which can be seen when the TV is turned off.
It is not entirely clear what the added value is of the extra panel while watching television. LG Display does show, however, what that extra panel can add when paintings are shown. Then information about that painting could be displayed on that bottom panel, according to an image shared with The Verge.
The manufacturer also shares with this medium that there is a screen in the top of the OLED Shelf that can be rolled down. This screen is not transparent. Images on transparent panels can look ‘ghostly’; this screen must therefore be able to improve the image quality by making the television non-transparent.
The OLED Shelf has two 55″ OLED panels, each with a 1080p resolution. LG Display uses these panels in three other concepts, including a Smart Window for office use. This screen could be incorporated into the walls of offices and for presentations or video calls If the screen is off, it is a slightly less transparent window.
LG Display also shows a concept of a Shopping Managing Showcase, a transparent screen intended for stores. These stores can place products behind this screen and, for example, show animations, or emphasize certain parts of the products behind it. Show Window has a similar function and, according to LG Display, is now being used in Seoul, London, China and Japan, among others.

The LG part is taking these screens to CES 2022. LG Display is not the same company as LG Electronics. Electronics make products that can be bought by consumers. Display is a supplier of screen panels and supplies to LG Electronics, but also to external companies.
