LG provides its 2019 OLED TVs with an HDMI 2.1 connection. This gives the TVs support for frame rates up to 120fps and variable refresh rate, a variant of FreeSync. LG is also going to release an 8k model in a new Z9 series.

Prior to the CES electronics fair, LG will announce a number of features of the new OLED TVs in a press release. The manufacturer does not yet mention all type numbers and sizes, but reports that there will be models in the Z9, W9, E9 and C9 series. They are therefore the successors of the current 8-series, which is also available in W, E, and C variants.

New is the Z series, in which LG will offer its first 8k OLED TV. It is an 88″ model, presumably the production version of the prototypes in that format that LG previously showed at trade fairs. The TVs in the other series are probably 4k models with sizes of 77″, 65″ and 55″. LG seems to provide the Z9 TV with a kind of built-in TV cabinet, product images show. The other models are similar in appearance to their predecessors.

All new OLED TVs will receive an HDMI 2.1 connection and some new LCDs will also receive this, but LG does not yet say which ones. LG’s 2018 OLED panels can already display 120fps images, but only from internal sources, because HDMI 2.0 cannot handle such frame rates in combination with a 4k resolution. The new HDMI 2.1 standard, which is now being used for the first time in practice, does provide enough bandwidth for this.

The HDMI 2.1 standard also adds other functionality, such as vrr or variable refresh rate. That is a technique such as FreeSync, which ensures smooth playback of games. LG claims that the new TVs also have an automatic low latency mode, which should prevent stuttering and tearing.

LG provides the OLED TVs that will be released in 2019 with a new α9 Gen 2 image processor. Like the 2018 models, they have support for Google Assistant, new this year is the addition of Amazon Alexa.

It is not yet known from when the 2019 versions of the LG OLED TVs will be on sale and what they will cost. The manufacturer will provide more details at the CES show, which kicks off next week in Las Vegas.
