LG promises fix for lower peak brightness in HDR game mode on CX OLED TVs
LG will come up with a fix for the reduced peak brightness that occurs in the HDR game mode on the CX OLED televisions after the implementation of firmware version 03.21.09. In any case, it concerns the CX OLED models, but it may concern more TVs from 2020.
LG admits that the latest firmware release has affected maximum brightness in game mode on some 2020 TV models. The company says it will release new firmware “in the coming weeks” to fix this brightness issue. This statement was shown by, among others, television reviewer Vincent Teoh in a recent video and TV reviewer John Archer shows the statement on Forbes.
Based on Teoh’s findings, among other things, it appears that the brightness in the HDR game mode no longer reaches the maximum of almost 700cd/m², but remains just below 600cd/m². In practice, this will not immediately be noticed by everyone, because it is a logarithmic scale and therefore not a huge difference. LG does not say whether it is a bug or whether it is a deliberate limitation of the brightness curve. A number of previous OLED models also had a similar issue, with HDR looking darker in game mode.
Firmware 03.21.09, which introduced the brightness issue, is said to have fixed a number of other issues, such as posterization and increased black levels when displaying Dolby Vision in the internal apps. Black used to look a bit dark gray and the transition from one color to another was rather abrupt, with no smooth transition. That should now be fixed, as are issues with e-arc. The previously identified issue of luminance changes occurring in dark scenes in games in Vrr mode does not appear to be resolved.
