LG presents Wing smartphone with rotating second screen
South Korean electronics maker LG has presented its Wing smartphone; a device with a rotatable second screen. That second screen can be used, among other things, for a second app or control elements in, for example, the camera app.
The primary screen of the LG Wing is a 6.8 “OLED screen measuring almost 110 square centimeters with dimensions of 15.8×6.9cm and a resolution of 2460×1080 pixels. The second screen is a 3.9” OLED panel with 1240×1080 pixels. dimensions of 7.5×6.5cm and an area of 48 square centimeters. Neither screen has a notch or hole in the screen; the front camera is in a pop-up module.
LG has in mind that users can use the second screen in more ways. While navigating, users can use the second screen for the call app, while in the camera or video apps, the control and setting functions can be on the second screen. Apps can occupy two screens, but users can also put different apps on the screens.
In addition, there is a Grip Mode that ignores touches on the second screen, to be able to hold the phone with one hand when shooting horizontal video. This is often not possible with other telephones. The Wing also has a so-called Gimbal mode with the option to turn on a Follow mode to follow objects or people and an option to make a horizontal pan.
The primary camera is a 64-megapixel sensor, presumably a Sony IMX686 or similar sensor. That is a camera with an approximately 40 square millimeter sensor and pixels of 0.8 microns each. LG has put an f / 1.8 lens for that. In addition, there are two cameras with ultra-wide-angle lens: a 12-megapixel camera with pixels of 1.4 microns and a sensor around 23 square millimeters. In addition, there is a camera with an ultra-wide angle lens of 13 megapixels and a sensor of around 15 square millimeters. LG does not specify why there are two cameras for the same function, but presumably the second is for taking videos in ‘Gimbal mode’, where the wide angle makes it possible to crop and then stabilize or with the onscreen joystick move the picture without moving the phone.
The phone runs on Android 10 and features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G with a built-in X52 modem with 5G. LG adds 8GB of memory and 128GB or 256GB of storage of an unknown type. The phone measures 169.5×74.5mm and is 10.9mm thick. The device weighs 260 grams. The battery in that housing has a capacity of 4000mAh. The phone will be released in the Benelux before the end of the year, but when exactly and at what price LG does not mention.
