LG presents 2:1 screen for unannounced G6 smartphone

LG Display has announced the screen for the South Korean manufacturer’s upcoming ‘flagship’, presumably the G6. It is a 2:1 screen with a diagonal of 5.7 “. The aspect ratio differs from previous smartphones from almost all manufacturers.

LG itself calls the aspect ratio 18:9, according to the press release that PhoneArena has put under its news item. It is an IPS LCD with a resolution of 2880×1440 pixels, which results in a sharpness of 564 pixels per inch. This means that the sharpness is on the same level as that of the LG G5, with its 5.3 “screen with 2560×1440 pixels.

Due to the narrower screen, the housing will probably be longer and less wide. If the G6 had the same screen edges as the G5, the housing would be 16.1 x 7.3 cm. The G5 is 14.9×7.4cm in size. The aspect ratio is good for ‘immersive viewing experiences’, says the manufacturer. The longer screen should also make it easier to run two apps side by side in landscape. It indicates the display as ‘QHD+’.

In addition, LG has made various improvements. For example, the top layer would allow 10 percent more light through, which should increase visibility in direct sunlight. Power consumption would be 30 percent lower. The display also has something called InTouch, which should lower the touch latency of the screen.

LG has often played with aspect ratios for its phones. It released smartphones under the name Vu with 4:3 screens a few years ago, while in 2009 it released a device with 21:9 display.

It happens more often that manufacturers present components of unannounced top models early. This happens with screens, processors, RAM and storage, among other things.
