LG is the last manufacturer to stop plasma TVs at the end of November
LG will completely stop producing plasma televisions at the end of November. The manufacturer wants to focus on the production of LCD and OLED TVs. According to the Korean group, there is too little demand to justify the supply of plasma TVs any longer.
LG announced the discontinuation of plasma TVs in financial documents that the group must hand over to regulatory authorities, according to Reuters. With the end of plasma production at the end of November, LG will stop at the same time as Samsung, which announced this intention in July.
A year ago, the largest remaining plasma manufacturer at the time, Panasonic, announced that it would stop making this type of television. LG and Samsung then announced that their sale would continue in 2014 at least. It is not known how large the stocks of both groups are, but plasma TVs are expected to disappear from the shelves in the course of 2015.
Plasma TVs will not be available from any major manufacturer. The technology has lost out to the cheaper LCD segment, while OLED is emerging as a technology for TVs with a good black display. The latter was one of the properties that made plasma popular with some of the consumers.
Although the manufacturers don’t say it explicitly, it also seems to have something to do with the fact that making smaller pixels with plasma is tricky; moving to uhd tvs that would have been difficult. In addition, making even smaller models of full HD TVs is already more difficult than the larger models.
