LG introduces curved midrange smartphones

LG has announced four new midrange smartphones ahead of the Mobile World Congress fair. Two models are slightly curved and all new smartphones get support for remote gestures, for taking pictures using a ‘selfie stick’.

The new devices have been given the names Magna, Spirit, Leon and Joy, with Magna being more high-end and Joy low-end. The Magna and Spirit have a slight curvature with a radius of 3000mm and in addition an in-cell touchscreen where the touch-sensitive technology and the LCD are incorporated in a single layer. All phones are equipped with quad-core socs, but LG has not released which types it concerns. A dual-core version of the Joy will also be released in some countries, which will also be equipped with 512MB of RAM. All other variants have 1GB of RAM.

The devices are equipped with functionality called Gesture Shot. Users can activate the camera with a hand movement, after which it takes a picture after three seconds. The new line’s camera can detect movements at 1.5 meters, so Gesture Shot works with selfie sticks, according to LG.

The phones will come on the market in both LTE and 3G versions, with the 3G variants getting a plastic back and the LTE versions will have metal backs. The devices will appear this week in a select number of markets, but LG will not announce which ones.
