LG, Huawei and Motorola are not coming with new Android Wear watches this year
LG, Huawei and Motorola will no longer come up with new smartwatches based on Android Wear this year. That is what the three manufacturers said to tech site Cnet. Last year they all came with new models. Only Asus has announced a new model so far.
The LG Watch Urbane, Moto 360 and Huawei Watch will not receive successors for the time being, even if Android Wear 2 comes out soon, the manufacturers confirm. The reasons for this differ. Parent company Lenovo says that Motorola believes most in watches that can connect to a mobile network. “And while that’s technically possible, the trade-offs on the product itself show that we’re not quite ready yet.” Some manufacturers have watches that can connect to 4g, such as LG’s Watch Urbane LTE series and the Frontier version of the Samsung Gear S3.
LG is waiting to see what will catch on before new models arrive. Samsung and Apple seem to focus mainly on fitness features. Samsung has equipped its Gear S3 with GPS, among other things, so that it can keep track of its location without a phone nearby. Apple did the same for the Watch Series 2 and has also made the case waterproof.
The Asus Zenwatch 3 with Android Wear will be released, although it is unclear when. In addition, Google itself would work on watches. These would be released in two variants, but when that will be is unknown. It is unknown who makes the watches. Android Wear 2 should be released this fall, at least as an update to some of the existing models with Android Wear.
