LG has posted a teaser online that seems to indicate that the manufacturer wants to present a smartphone with gesture control. The presentation is scheduled for a month from now, just before the start of the Mobile World Congress telecom fair in Barcelona.

The presentation will take place around MWC in Barcelona, according to the teaser. The thirteen-second video shows the text ‘Goodbye touch’, while a hand gestures above a surface. LG makes few devices where it can replace touch control with gestures. Smartphones are the most obvious of these, because Mobile World Congress is the fair where LG has repeatedly announced new phones in recent years.

It is unknown how that gesture control would work and what functions users could control. There have been several experiments with the control of parts of smartphone interfaces without touch. For example, Pixel phones and various other smartphones have a squeeze function to invoke an app. Samsung once had a feature to let users scroll in the browser with eye movements.

Many manufacturers have already announced that they will hold an event around the telecom fair. Samsung kicks off with its own event the Wednesday before for the Galaxy S10 series. On Sunday, February 24, Xiaomi and Microsoft will hold events, while Sony will show its new smartphones on Monday.
