LG extends AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support to older televisions
LG will provide certain LCD and OLED televisions that it produced in 2018 with AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support via a software update. LG previously said it would not do this, because it could not guarantee that it would provide a good user experience.
MacRumors writes about expanding AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support based on an updated support document. It seems that LG has since taken this change to the document offline. According to MacRumors, it stated that all LG LCD TVs from 2018 with SK and UK in the model name will receive the update. The OLED models ‘B8 to Z8’ also receive the update. The update should be released by October 2020.
In July 2019, the first LG televisions received support for Apple technologies. Then LG said that only the televisions it was going to release from 2019 would receive support. Owners of older LG televisions were unhappy with that decision. A user started a petition on Change.org, which has more than 20,750 signatures at the time of writing.
AirPlay 2 allows users to stream videos, photos, and music from an Apple device or the Apple TV app to a supported television, among other things. HomeKit lets users control their television with the Home app or with voice assistant Siri. AirPlay 2 requires at least iOS version 12.4.
