LG Display will significantly increase production of 48-inch OLED panels

LG Display will significantly increase the production of OLED panels with a diagonal of 48 inches. At least that’s what the Korean news site Chosun reports. LG Display would achieve this by commissioning a new production line entirely dedicated to these 48″ panels.

According to Chosun sources, LG Display will begin the new 48″ OLED panel production line at its South Korean factory in Paju from next month. It is estimated that this should contribute to more than one million 48″ OLED panels produced in total this year. . That number was 220,000 panels last year.

Until now, these relatively small OLED panels come from the Chinese factory in Guangzhou. There, two 48″ and two 77″ panels are produced from a single glass substrate. In the new production line, only 48″ panels have to be extracted from the glass substrates. In this 8.5G fab in Paju, eight 48″ panels will probably be extracted from the glass substrate panels with a size of 2200x2500mm.

The 48-inch OLED panels are relatively new. LG, Sony and Philips, among others, brought 48-inch OLED TVs onto the market for the first time last year. Partly due to the relatively limited numbers and popularity, these 48″ OLED TVs were often more expensive than the more readily available OLED TVs with a 55″ diagonal. That may change if LG Display actually increases production numbers.

Incidentally, 48″ is no longer the smallest size; 42″ OLED panels will also be available this year, although no OLED televisions have yet been announced with the 42″ panels.
