LG delivered 18 percent more smartphones at the end of 2014 than the year before
LG delivered 15.6 million smartphones in the quarter, an increase of 18 percent compared to the same period last year. Sales increased in North America in particular, with deliveries up 78 percent.
Year-on-year, quarterly shipments of LG smartphones increased by 18 percent, but were down 7 percent from the third quarter. Normally, the end-of-year period ensures good sales, but LG did not release a new top model from October to December to stimulate that sales.
With the number of 15.6 million smartphones delivered, LG is behind Samsung and Apple, who both delivered around 74.5 million devices. Lenovo and Huawei are also said to have sold more smartphones, each around 24 million.
TV sales in the fourth quarter of 2014 were flat year-on-year, up 20 percent from the previous quarter. LG delivered more TVs in Europe, among other places. In the fourth quarter of 2014, LG suffered a quarterly loss of 168 million euros, mainly due to amortization of costs associated with the discontinuation of plasma TVs.
LG’s annual profit for 2014 rose by 125 percent to 474.8 million euros. Turnover remained virtually the same at 49.5 billion euros, with the smartphone branch maintaining turnover. LG will focus on marketing to improve brand awareness and the company will focus more on thriving markets to improve its bottom line.
