LG comes with 5.3″ smartphone screen with wafer-thin edges

LG has announced an LCD panel for smartphones with a 0.7mm bezel, thinner than the thickness of a credit card. According to the manufacturer, this is the thinnest screen edge to date. The resolution of the 5.3″ panel is 1920×1080 pixels.

LG Display, the LG business unit that makes LCD panels, among other things, developed the screen. The company uses a production method that it calls Neo Edge. LG uses glue instead of double-sided tape to attach and seal the electronics and backlight along the edges.

Because there’s no plastic part to fix the panel and backlight, Neo Edge technology ensures bezels with minimal thickness, while LG says it prevents light leaks at the same time. The screen is also dust and waterproof according to LG Display. The manufacturer would also prevent rust by using glue.

In addition, the panels use LG’s Advanced In-Cell Touch technology. LG integrates the touch layer in the LCD module, which makes the panel thinner and the screen edge can also decrease further. LG has been using this technology for two years now.

The Korean group will start mass production of the new 5.3″ panels in November. Manufacturers in China will receive the first batch because, according to LG, “the demand for large screens is very high”.
