LG can quadruple production capacity of OLED panels for TVs this year
LG will start using a new production line for OLED panels before the end of the year. In theory, this would allow the group to quadruple its OLED production. The production line will produce 55″, 65″ and 77″ panels for TVs, which may lead to a price drop.
A spokesperson confirms to CNet that the Korean group will start using its M2 production line for OLED panels this year. At maximum output, the line provides 26,000 OLED panels per month. LG’s current M1 production line has a maximum capacity of 8,000 panels per month.
In addition to the higher capacity, the M2 line is of a new generation. The line produces panels based on glass substrates with dimensions of 2200x2500mm and according to CNet this means that less residual material remains. The higher yield leads to a decrease in costs and partly because of this, the price of OLED TVs could fall as the production line gets up to speed. Initially, LG is likely to limit production capacity based on demand.
