LG C2 and G2 get Dolby Vision Precision Detail and better near-black reproduction

LG has released a new firmware update in the United States specifically for the C2 and G2 OLED TVs. Multiple websites and users report that with this the Dolby Vision Precision Detail option is now available. The near black handling would also have been improved.

It concerns firmware version 03.20.24 for the LG G2 and C2. This one is only available for now the US support pages from the official LG website, but the update will already be available as an ota update. The most notable innovations are a claimed improvement in the reproduction of details in dark, almost black images and the addition of the Dolby Vision Precision Detail option.

Precision Detail is a feature that LG says analyzes content information to improve brightness and contrast. According to the manufacturer, this leads to more visible detail in elements such as clouds, rocks, sand, water and snow. This requires the necessary computing power and that means the presence of the Alpha 9 Gen 5 processor is necessary; it is in the LG C2, G2 and also in the Z2 8K OLED TV. The latter model will presumably receive Precision Detail support at a later date.

According to users on the AVSForum this function is not available in the Cinema picture mode, but is available in the advanced settings of the Cinema Home picture mode. There are users who speak of a noticeable improvement, but there are also comments that speak of a picture that becomes clearer as a whole. The Cinema Home mode is seen as a brighter mode than the regular Cinema mode; combined with the Precision Detail function, the increased brightness of Cinema Home should be accompanied by seeing more details that would otherwise be less visible.

LG wrote earlier this year that Precision Detail would be available as part of a Dolby Vision IQ update. The latter concerns an existing feature for adjusting the Dolby Vision display based on the lighting conditions in the viewing room. However, the Precision Detail option seems to work on its own when playing Dolby Vision content, without having to work in conjunction with the light sensor of the Dolby Vision IQ feature.

The manufacturer adds other improvements with the new firmware, such as a custom Cinema picture mode that previously led to a too bright display. Furthermore, the AV1 bit rate has been increased to 60Mbit/s, although this only concerns the use of the internal media server.
