LG brings Nvidia G-Sync support to OLED TVs with firmware update

LG is starting to distribute a firmware update to 2019 models of its OLED televisions to add Nvidia G-Sync compatibility. Customers in North America will be first, followed by other regions, including Europe.

The G-Sync compatibility comes to LG’s OLED models E9, C9 and B9 from 2019. The firmware update will be available for European customers before the end of the year, the Korean manufacturer promises. The company does not provide a precise schedule for the rollout. LG does report that owners of eligible TVs can update manually, but it is unclear to what extent they can update earlier than via the automatic update.

LG announced in early September that 2019 OLED televisions would receive the G-Sync Compatible certificate. Then the company talked about the E9 and C9 models. The TVs in the B9 series have been added to that. LG promises an input lag of 6ms when displaying images in a 1440p resolution with a refresh rate of 120Hz. In 4k display at 60Hz, the input lag would be 13ms.

The televisions in question already support Adaptive Sync from VESA via HDMI 2.1, which, like G-Sync, should prevent tearing and stuttering of game images when used in combination with a video card. Because the current Nvidia video cards have hdmi 2.0b and not hdmi 2.1, the refresh rate with 4k display is a maximum of 60Hz and not 120Hz.
