Let’s Encrypt exits beta with 1.7 million certificates issued

The Let’s Encrypt project has entered beta and reports that more than 1.7 million certificates have been issued for about 3.8 million different websites since September. The project has also managed to attract a number of new sponsors.

For example, the sponsors Cisco and Akamai have again committed to support the project; they will do this for the next three years. Other sponsors supporting the project include Gemalto and HP Enterprise, Let’s Encrypt reports. According to Stephen Ludin, Chief Architect at Akamai, this milestone is proof that the project can deliver on its goals and that it can have a huge impact on the web ecosystem.

About a month ago, the Certificate Authority issued its millionth SSL certificate, when the number of domains provided with certificates was 2.5 million. With the conclusion of the beta phase, the public beta has lasted approximately four months from its announcement in December 2015. The beta label was used to indicate that some work still needed to be done before the service works reliably on a wide range of platforms .

The goal of Let’s Encrypt is to ultimately make the entire internet safer. That is why it is important that issuing the free SSL certificates is as simple and stable as possible.
