Lenovo shows prototype Windows Holographic VR headset
Lenovo showed off a prototype VR headset intended for use with Windows Holographic at the CES trade show in Las Vegas. Microsoft announced in October that several manufacturers would come with headsets this year.
According to The Verge, it is a non-functional prototype, which has no release date other than “during this year”. Therefore, the product seems to be still at an early stage. The glasses are equipped with two OLED screens with a resolution of 1440×1440 pixels, which is higher than that of the HTC Vive or the Oculus Rift. In addition, the glasses have two cameras on the front, eliminating the need for external devices for tracking, according to Engadget.
The goggles themselves weigh 350 grams, which is about 200 grams lighter than the Vive and 100 grams lighter than the Rift. Furthermore, the device has a folding part for the screens, making it easy to temporarily see something of the outside world. An exact price is not yet known, according to Lenovo it is somewhere between three hundred and four hundred dollars. The manufacturer tells The Verge that the price will be more towards three hundred dollars.
With the glasses, users should be able to view applications from the Windows Store in a theater mode, among other things. In addition, certain HoloLens software is adapted for use with the glasses. Microsoft announced at the end of October that manufacturers, including HP, Dell, Asus and Acer, would come with VR glasses starting at $299.
