Lenovo partners with Razer on gaming desktops
Lenovo and Razer are going to make gaming PCs together. The two companies will be exhibiting their first computer, a Y-series gaming desktop, at Dreamhack 2015 to coincide with the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show.
Although Lenovo’s Y-series now only consists of gaming laptops, it will be expanded with gaming desktops in the future, the companies say in an email. The computer, as yet unnamed, features a typical Razer-style design with a black carbon fiber-look housing and color-customizable diffused lighting.
It is striking that Lenovo has already unveiled the design of the desktop during this year’s IFA fair. Then the company spoke of a Y700 laptop, and the Y700 and Y900 desktops. The design of the desktops at the time was similar to what the two companies now show, only then Razer was not mentioned anywhere. It’s unclear whether Razer was involved in designing the devices back then or not. At the time, there was also talk of a release in November of this year, but the product page for, for example, the Y900 and this new announcement from Razer and Lenovo now contradict this. The Y700 gaming laptop is available, but as far as we know, the name of Razer is not associated with it.
The specifications of the desktop are currently unknown. What can be seen from the photos is that the desktop seems to be equipped with Nvidia video cards in an SLI setup. There are also two USB 3.0 ports on the front, one of which is equipped to provide USB devices with power when the desktop is turned off. Furthermore, the two companies report that they are looking at multiple ways to join forces, but are not announcing any other products at this time.
If this indeed concerns the previously unveiled Y700 and Y900, Lenovo will equip these desktops with Core i7 processors from the Skylake generation, a maximum of 32 and 64GB respectively, and an Nvidia Geforce GTX 970 and GTX 980. Both are also possible. models can be chosen from an SSD with 256GB capacity or a 2TB hybrid drive. However, it is not certain that these specifications will apply to the desktop that Lenovo and Razer are announcing. The Y700 got a price tag of 1,000 euros and the Y900 1,500 euros.
