Lenovo announces new ThinkPad laptops and ThinkCentre PC with privacy screens

Lenovo has upgraded its ThinkPad X1 laptops in the run-up to the CES fair. The laptops now run on Intel’s Comet Lake processors, and are optionally available with a privacy screen. The manufacturer has also announced a new ThinkCentre all-in-one.

Lenovo has provided both the ThinkPad X1 Carbon and the more expensive X1 Yoga with better specifications. The laptops get a tenth-generation Comet Lake i5 or i7 processor from Intel, and up to 16GB of ram. Both laptops can be upgraded to a storage space of 2TB. However, the main difference from the previous generation ThinkPads is in the new 1080p display at 500 nits. Those screens can optionally be equipped with Lenovo’s own ThinkPad PrivacyGuard technology. This is a built-in privacy screen that can be switched on and off by software so that only the user sitting directly in front of the laptop can look at the screen. The keyboard has a new function row containing buttons to directly initiate and control VoIP calls, and the laptop should last 18.5 hours on a full battery, just like the previous version of the model. The laptops will both receive support for Wi-Fi 6. The laptops will be available ‘later in 2020’. The X1 Carbon starts at 1499 dollars or 1340 euros, the X1 Yoga is a hundred dollars more expensive.

In addition to new ThinkPads, Lenovo has also announced an all-in-one PC. The ThinkCentre M90a AIO can be configured with a 10th Gen Intel i7 Comet Lake with vPro. The computer has a 23.8″ display with full HD resolution. The model is available with a maximum of 32GB of RAM, a 2TB hard drive and an SSD of one terabyte. It is also possible on this model to have privacy features on the screen. For example, the screen can automatically get a blur as soon as it detects through the webcam that no user is behind it.Just like in the new ThinkPads, it is possible to take a PrivacyGuard screen on the ThinkCentre. 541×492.2x46mm and weighs 7.51kg. At the back are six USB 3.1 type-a-USB ports, two of which are second generation, a USB-C port, a card reader and a headphone jack. The computer will be available from June 2020 starting at USD 1099, or EUR 985.
