Lenovo announces first Motorola ThinkPhone
Lenovo has announced the Motorola ThinkPhone. The brand positions the phone as a business device that companies can use in combination with ThinkPad laptops. It is the first phone under the Think brand.
Lenovo is bringing its ThinkShield security platform to Android for the phone; that only worked on Windows until now. The phone also has Keysafe: a chip that is isolated from the soc for storing security keys. Apple, Google and Samsung, among others, already did this in their mobile devices.
For business users, there is also ‘zero touch enrollment’ to make management easier. Lenovo provides four years of security updates for the device and additionally equips the phone with three OS upgrades. The housing is made of aramid, aluminum and Gorilla Glass Victus. There is also the Red Key, a hotkey at the top left of the housing that users can set themselves. Companies can also remotely configure the button for employees.
In the field of software, there is also Think 2 Think, software to link a Windows machine to the smartphone. This includes a shared clipboard for copying and pasting, File Drop for exchanging files, streaming apps to the PC, using the phone as a webcam on a desktop and exchanging notifications. Also, users of the phone can easily create a hotspot. In addition, Lenovo includes Motorola’s ReadyFor suite, a way to use the phone as a desktop. That’s just software.
The phone measures 158.8×74.4×8.3mm and weighs 189g. The screen has a diagonal of 6.6 inches and the 2400x1080px OLED panel supports a 144Hz refresh rate. A 3.5mm jack is missing. The 5000mAh battery can be charged with 68W via a cable and with 15W wirelessly. The battery must also last 1200 cycles, compared to 800 cycles of other Motorola phones. The device has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 soc and supports Wi-Fi 6E. The memory is 8GB and the storage is 256GB.
The camera has a sensor of 50 square millimeters and a resolution of 50 megapixels. It can film up to 8k at 30fps or 4k at 60fps. The second camera has an ultra-wide-angle lens and a 13-megapixel sensor measuring about 15 square millimeters. The 32-megapixel front camera has a sensor of about 23 square millimeters and an f/2.45 lens. The ThinkPhone will be released at the end of January for an unknown amount, the manufacturer says. It will be released under the brand name Motorola, because it is the better-known telephone brand, although Think is a Lenovo brand name.
