Lego releases sustainable bricks made from sugar cane

Lego has introduced building blocks that consist of a type of plastic made from sugar cane. The Danish toy giant wants to make the production process more sustainable with this. These vegetable Lego bricks are not biodegradable, but they are bio-based, which is more sustainable.

According to Business Insider, the new Lego bricks consist of 98 percent polymer polyethylene, which is made from ethanol and produced from sugar cane. This material is not yet biodegradable, but the building blocks are made from renewable raw materials: the bio-based material is suitable for reuse, for example, when making new Lego blocks.

The first Lego building blocks made with sugar cane are already available in a number of countries. The Danish company wants most products and packaging to consist of environmentally friendly or recycled materials by 2030.

Lego announced the arrival of the sustainable building blocks in March. According to the company, the sugarcane-based plastic is identical in properties to the pebbles still made with conventional plastic. With the sugarcane bricks, Lego joins the World Wildlife Fund’s Bioplastic Feedstock Alliance.
