League of Legends players with inappropriate nicknames will be given personality tests

Riot Games, the studio behind the popular moba game League of Legends, has users with inappropriate nicknames fill out questionnaires designed to test how aggressive their behavior is and whether those users have Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

The questionnaires were posted on Reddit on Wednesday by user Darraku. One survey appears to be based heavily on an inventory questionnaire by Robert Raskin and Howard Terry to diagnose narcissistic personality disorder. The other seems to be based on an aggressive personality measurement tool by Pamela Orpinas and Ralph Frankowski. That’s according to Motherboard research.

According to Reddit posters, nicknamed players who violate the Riot Games Terms of Use will be assigned a temporary nickname when the developer catches them. They can only request a new nickname when they complete both questionnaires and have played fifty games of LoL with the replacement nickname. After a player has met these requirements, it can take up to a week before Riot Games grants permission to change the nickname. Among other things, offensive, vulgar or sexually explicit nicks are not allowed under the terms. Other players may report inappropriate nicknames to Riot Games.

It is not clear at this time how the answers to the questions will influence Riot Games’ decision on the nicknames. It is also not clear what exactly the studio does with the data it collects in this way. In the past, the studio has already shared data with scientists to gain more insights about its 67 million monthly players. However, there is no way for the studio to verify the responses to the surveys. Riot Games declined comment to Motherboard.
