LastPass will end Xmarks bookmark sync service on May 1
LastPass, which offers a password manager, has announced that it will discontinue its Xmarks service on May 1. This allowed users to sync bookmarks between different devices and browsers.
In a email to users LastPass writes that accounts will remain active until May 1. After that date, favorites created will no longer be synchronized and the accounts will be disabled. Bookmarks should still be available in the browser after that, according to LastPass. The company, owned by LogMeIn since 2015, mentions that it is focusing on its password manager and that it has decided to discontinue Xmarks after a review.
Lastpass acquired Xmarks in 2010 after the service faced financial difficulties. The plugin then remained free and a Premium version was released for use on mobile devices. Xmarks itself started in 2006. Back then the service was still called Foxmarks and it was only available as an extension for Firefox. Four years later, the service announced it would stop because it was unable to find a suitable revenue model. The takeover followed shortly after.
