Larian is working on Baldur’s Gate III crossplay between PC and consoles
Baldur’s Gate III will eventually have crossplay between PCs and consoles. Larian Studios confirmed this to Eurogamer. This will allow players to play multiplayer together on different platforms when that feature is released. It is not yet known when that will happen.
Larian’s director of publishing, Michael Douse, tells Eurogamer that crossplay is currently in the works for Baldur’s Gate III. Douse states that crossplay ‘was always planned’, but that the studio had known for some time that the feature would only appear after release. “It’s on the roadmap and while we have an idea for when we want it done, we don’t want to put a date on it until we know for sure.”
The feature will eventually allow PC and PS5 players to play Baldur’s Gate III’s multiplayer mode together. This will also be possible with the Xbox; an Xbox version of the game will be released later this year. The game supports all cross-saves, allowing users to use their PC save file on consoles and vice versa.
Baldur’s Gate III was released on August 3 for PC and was well received by reviewers and players. On Thursday, September 7, the game was also released for the PlayStation 5. The Xbox version was delayed due to demands from Microsoft, which stated that the Xbox Series X and S versions of games must have the same features. That requirement has been removed for Baldur’s Gate III: the Series S version of the game will not have split-screen multiplayer because that console is not powerful enough for it. The Xbox version of the game is planned for ‘later this year’, but has no concrete release date yet.
