Laptops with Nvidia GeForce MX250 can have fast or slower GPUs
There are two versions of the mobile GeForce MX250 from Nvidia and it is difficult for consumers to determine whether a laptop contains the fast or slow variant. Notebookcheck claims that based on its own findings.
Notebookcheck has learned from several sources that there are laptops with a 10W variant, in addition to the models with a 25W video card, and in both cases the manufacturers would speak of a GeForce MX250. The 25W video card with ID number 1D13 would be the standard version. The 10W variant with ID number 1D52 has lower clock speeds, the site expects. Notebookcheck currently only has laptops with a 25W GPU for testing.
If the message is correct, history will repeat itself, because the predecessor of the MX250 also ended up in laptops in two variants. The 10W version of that MX150 video card turned out to be thirty percent slower than the 25W variant. It was difficult for consumers to find out which version a laptop had before purchasing, because manufacturers usually did not publish details about the type used.
After purchase, GPU-Z can be used to detect which GPU a laptop has. Huawei would in any case have promised to use the 25W version for the refresh of the MateBook X Pro, Notebookcheck writes.
Nvidia introduced the MX250 at the end of February and performance indications from the company itself indicated that the GPU offers no performance improvements compared to its MX150 predecessor. It is not known whether Nvidia is basing this on the 10W or the 25W version. The MX250 and MX150 are entry-level GPUs for thin and light laptops that should offer slightly higher performance than the graphics chip integrated in many processors.
