Storage product maker LaCie has discovered a hack that went unnoticed for nearly a year on March 27, 2013. As a result, the hackers were able to access credit card details of customers who ordered through the LaCie site for a long time.

On March 19 this year, LaCie said it received a message from the FBI that unauthorized persons had gained access to customer transactions through the French storage specialist’s website with malware. After investigation, LaCie concludes that transactions made between March 27, 2013 and March 10, 2014 were viewable.

This made it possible to access names, addresses, e-mail addresses and credit card details, including the expiry date. Usernames and passwords used by customers for the LaCie website were also accessible. As a precautionary measure, LaCie has discontinued sales through its site and reset all passwords.

The company is now switching to a payment provider that can perform transactions in a more secure manner. Affected customers were notified of the hack on April 11. The group is working with a security company on further steps. It is not clear how many customers have been affected.
