Konami has temporarily suspended the Metal Gear Online open beta. The beta had started on January 12 and was stopped a day later due to an exploit that did not require players to pay for certain microtransactions. Metal Gear Online is now playable again.

For a short time, the MB Coins in-game currency was available to players without having to pay for it. The MB Coins are normally only available through microtransactions. An exploit made it possible to make the purchases without paying, if the Steam wallet did not contain enough money.

Metal Gear Online is the online mode of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. The payment method can be used in MGO, for example, to purchase costumes. In the single player, the MB Coins can be used, among other things, to build a Forward Operating Base. The MB Coins could be transferred from multiplayer mode to single player mode for use there.

Konami told the Steam forum that “because of a potential exploit, access to the beta has been temporarily removed while a fix is being developed.” Shortly afterwards, the publisher announced that the beta is back online and that the exploit has been resolved. What will happen to the MB Coins obtained through the exploit is unknown. It is also not yet known whether action will be taken against users of the exploit.
