Kodi has released an update for its media player software. With that, there is now support for 64-bit Windows systems. Versions of Kodi for other operating systems already had support for 64-bit.

On his blog, Kodi explains why it has taken so long before the Windows versions are also equipped with 64-bit support. For example, the software makers did not see any advantage of 64-bit for a long time, but in the end the decision was made to build in support. At that time, however, a lot had to be done to the underlying source code, which meant that the construction took years. The 64-bit support is available in version 18 of Kodi.

The software maker has also announced that the UWP version of Kodi is still being worked on. The version for the universal application platform on Windows 10 has been in development for quite some time, but according to Kodi, making the 64-bit version of Kodi available also helps in making the UWP version; many of the necessary libraries can be used for both versions. However, it is not yet clear when the UWP variant will be released.

For now, Kodi version 18 is only available as a developer build, codenamed Leia. Apps for the various operating systems that Kodi supports can be downloaded from the download page.
