Kingston announces a new family of 2.5″ SATA SSDs. The UV400 series is available in 120GB, 240GB, 480GB and 960GB versions. The SSDs use the Marvell 88SS1074 controller and TLC Nand memory.

Kingston promises read and write speeds of up to 550MB/s and 500MB/s respectively. The 120GB variant has a maximum write speed of 350MB/s and the 240GB variant has a maximum write speed of 490MB/s. The number of iops for reading is 90,000 iops and for writing it is 15,000 iops for the smallest model to 50,000 iops for the largest version. Kingston lists TBW values of 50TB, 100TB, 200TB and 400TB for the four different SSDs from smallest to largest.

Various Pricewatch stores have included the Kingston SSDNow UV400 SSDs from 120GB to 480GB in their range. The price per gigabyte is about 25 cents. The 960GB version is for sale at Amazon Germany for less than 150 euros, but is not available. It is not clear whether Amazon will actually deliver the UV400 SSD for that amount. With a price of less than 16 cents per gigabyte, it would be by far the cheapest SSD at the moment.

Kingston sells the SSDs separately, but also supplies bundles with accessories. The Upgrade Kit includes an adapter so that the drive can be mounted in a 3.5″ bay and a 2.5″ enclosure to use the SSD as an external USB drive. Kingston also supplies a SATA cable and Acronis data migration software.

May 26 update: The quoted price of about 150 euros at Amazon.de is a pricing error. The webshop has informed customers about this, says tweaker Ruben Vermeulen.
