Kingpin remaster has been delayed to 2021
Kingpin: Reloaded, a remaster of 1999’s violent first person shooter Kingpin: Life of Crime, has been postponed. The game should have been released this year, but publisher 3D Realms has now pushed the release to sometime in the coming year.
The team behind Kingpin: Reloaded said in a post on Steam that early this year when the game was announced, the goal was to have the release take place in the summer. However, that did not work, because the developer changed its approach to the remaster earlier this year.
Since Kingpin’s original source code no longer exists, the original plan was to recreate the game in a modern engine. However, the team says it soon found that a better approach was needed to make the new game feel completely like the original. To that end, it was decided that it was better to reverse engineer the original, building the missing parts from scratch.
The creators say they are hard at work with this renewed approach and that they have now reached a point where Kingpin: Reloaded is almost finished. For example, the recreation of every texture in the game in a high resolution is almost finished. The next phase will follow in January, in which everything is put together. More videos about the game will then also appear and a closed beta will be released. It is still unknown when the game will be released.
Kingpin: Life of Crime is from 1999 and was created by Xatrix Entertainment and published by Interplay Entertainment. The story begins with the main character being beaten up by The Kingpin, a high-ranking criminal. The game is about the revenge you take. At the time, the game was known for its coarse language in conversations and the way violence was portrayed. In addition, the game had a number of innovative elements, such as the way damage to the body worked. It was also possible to modify weapons and an FPS played an important role for the interaction with NPCs.
