Kim Dotcom is working on a new storage service with 100GB of free space
Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom says he is working on a new storage service that will give users 100GB of storage. According to Dotcom, the service will be given a name that makes people happy and the website may go live in January.
With the statements that Kim Dotcom makes to TorrentFreak, he seems to hint at a return of Megaupload. Also announces he announced the new service in a tweet. In it, he writes that the website offers 100GB of storage, on-the-fly encryption and synchronization with ‘all your devices’. Furthermore, there are no limits for sharing data.
Dotcom concludes his tweet with the hashtag #5thRaidAnniversary, referring to the January 2012 raid on the action aimed at shutting down Megaupload. With the reference, Dotcom seems to be hinting that the new service will go live in January 2017.
After Megaupload closed, Dotcom launched a new service called Mega. In 2015, he severed his ties with Mega and stated in an interview with Slashdot that users’ data is no longer safe with that service.
The new service, whose name has not yet been announced, will be “much better than Mega and much easier to use,” according to Kim Dotcom. He told TorrentFreak that it’s too early to go into specifics, but he says eight years of knowledge and a long period of planning will yield “his best creation yet.”
Kim Dotcom is still involved in lawsuits. New Zealand wants to extradite him to the US, which wants to try him for copyright infringement. In December, a judge in New Zealand ruled that he may be extradited, but the ruling is still under appeal. That will be dealt with in August.
