Khronos introduces standard to unify VR platforms
Khronos, the organization behind the OpenGL and Vulkan APIs, among others, has announced that it is working with multiple companies to launch an open standard for virtual reality. The goal is to create an api that can work with all vr platforms.
The progress of the platform is still at an early stage. Khronos has joined major players in the virtual reality market, but development has yet to begin. Thanks to a common set of APIs for, among other things, headset tracking, developers will soon be able to easily transfer their programs to VR systems that comply with the Khronos standard. The standard must provide open source support for headsets, controllers and other VR accessories.
The company is already in talks with AMD, ARM, Epic Games, Google VR, The Immersive Technology Alliance, Intel, Nvidia, Oculus, The Open Gaming Alliance, Razer, Sensics, Tobii, Valve and VeriSilicon. With the collaboration of these companies, the standard should support the major VR platforms on PC and mobile, such as the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and OSVR.
Khronos reports that after a research phase in which the scope and goals of the project are determined, work will be carried out at a rapid pace. The company does not specify when it expects the standard to be ready for use.
