“ Justice US wants to close a deal with CFO Huawei that is not allowed to leave Canada ”
Justice in the US is said to be in talks with Huawei financial director Meng Wanzhou, who has been unable to leave Canada for two years now due to a fraud charge. The deal would mean that she pleaded guilty and returned to China in return.
Meng would not be inclined to accept the deal because she feels she is innocent, The Wall Street Journal reports. The business newspaper relies on anonymous sources and the parties involved refrain from commenting. In addition to CFO, Meng is also the daughter of the founder of the Chinese tech giant.
Huawei’s financial director was arrested two years ago. In a presentation about Huawei’s ties with Iran in 2013, she allegedly kept silent to banks about the US trade embargo against Iran, which led those banks to approve hundreds of millions of dollars in transactions. Since the arrest, she has resisted extradition to the United States.
The arrest came at a time when the political relationship between the US and China was under high tension and Huawei has become entangled in world politics. The consequences of this have now become increasingly visible; deliveries of Huawei smartphones in western countries are declining sharply and Huawei has sold subsidiary brand Honor to the Shenzhen government.
