The Half-Life 2 modification Jurassic Life is available as a standalone game, eliminating the need to own the Valve shooter for those interested. The mod lets you visit the dinosaur park as park warden Robert Muldoon, including armament.

The mod’s creators describe Jurassic Life as a full-length standalone game. Half-Life 2 is no longer needed to play the mod; only the Source SDK 2013 available for free via Steam is necessary.

The developers have since released a training video that introduces the weapons, dinosaurs and the voice actors. The voice actors try to imitate the roles from the official movie Jurassic Park, which already shows how much this should be considered a fan game.

Things didn’t end too well for shotgun-armed Robert Muldoon in that movie, but in Jurassic Life it could take an entirely different turn. As a player you take on the role of Muldoon and you have to respond to the outbreak of all kinds of dinosaurs, for which you have all kinds of weapons at your disposal. The mod takes inspiration from Michael Crichton’s original book and official movies based on it, but isn’t directly based on it; Jurassic Life has its own story.

The makers emphasize that there is no profit motive and that the game is made by fans and is intended for fans. With this they probably hope to prevent film studio Universal from objecting. The game is not yet fully completed; that should happen sometime this year.
